RE: Pride and Prejudice Questions Chapter 1

1. The first title Jane Austen chose for this work was First Impressions. What are your first impressions of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet? Compare and contrast them. Illustrate this with dialogue that gives insight into their characters.

2. What examples of humor can be found in the first chapter?

‘Pride and prejudice’ is full of good english humor. This novel begins with joke about marriage. ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.’ Then we can enjoy humor in dialogues beetween Mr. and Mrs. Bennet  because of their differencies in character
– “My dear, you flatter me. I certainly HAVE had my share of beauty, but I do not pretend to be anything extraordinary now. When a woman has five grown-up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty.”
– “In such cases, a woman has not often much beauty to think of.”
