RE: The Catcher in the Rye help with homework Chapter 19

Chapter 19

  1. “Luc” is the Latin word root meaning light. Of what significance is it that Salinger names Holden’s older friend Carl Luce?
  2. What does Holden confide in Carl Luce that shows how conservative and traditional his attitudes are?
  3. What are some negative qualities we see in Holden in this chapter?
  4. Make a list of the names of those who have rejected Holden in one way or another beginning with Chapter 1 and ending with Chapter 19. Why do you think Holden alienates so many people?

What are some negative qualities we see in Holden in this chapter?

Some negative qualities we find in Holden are that he tries too hard to be somebody he’s not. He starts to get a little too personal with Carl Luce when he tells Luce,” All right, but listen. Take you and this chinese babe. What’s so good about you two? (Chapter 19) When Holden states,” Maybe I’ll go to China. My sex life is lousy.” By reading this I thought Holden is rally trying to belong because he can’t quite find himself because of his lonliness.
