Lights are very symbolic in this book. At first they fail to go on “the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night – and, as obscurely as it had begun, his career as Trimalchio was over.” And then Daysies rejection “I waited, and about four o’clock she came to the window and stood there for a minute and then turned out the light.”
