Jane Eyre Questions Chapter 36

– How does the novel end?  What events occur?  What do you learn about what happened to Rochester in Jane’s absence?
– Jane says that she and Rochester’s story is both sad and wonderful.  How is it both?
– Unlike many Victorian heroine’s, who were never equal to the hero but someone who deferred to them, Jane has always been pretty independent, making critics think of this as feminist literature.  In what ways is she now equal to Mr. Rochester.
– Finally – is the ending a “happy” one?  Is it satisfying?
