Is Amazon RDS an appropriate database service?
This is a very critical step as it decides the overall success of the implementation. Several cloud service providers were evaluated. The factors required for selecting the appropriate cloud provider for this application along with two major vendors who can offer cost-effective, secure, reliable and high performance services have been discussed in detail in the following sections.
In the existing IT system, data is not managed and stored efficiently for nurses. An effective data management system prevents data losses, facilitates data sharing, improves data security, provides faster access to data, effective data integration and thereby improved services to the customers. The new IT infrastructure in the cloud is expected to reap these benefits and overcome the drawbacks of the existing system regarding data storage and data sharing.
As part of this proposal, it has been suggested to store data for NursesRU in relational databases in the cloud.
Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) can be used to set up and manage a relational database in the cloud. This is cost-efficient and provides excellent options regarding scalability, security, storage, and automated tasks.DB instances in Amazon RDS can support MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MariaDB, and PostgreSQL DB Engines. DB instance storage comes in three types: Magnetic, General Purpose (SSD), and Provisioned IOPS (PIOPS). They differ in performance characteristics and price, allowing you to tailor your storage performance and cost to the needs of your database.
Provisioned IOPS storage is suggested for NursesRUs as it is designed specifically to cater to database workloads and optimized for OLTP workloads that demand consistent performance requirements. Also, the amount of storage required can also be allocated during DB instance creation.
