Imagine what it would be like waking up every day and not wanting to be here anymore, because of how much you were suffering? Anyone would agree that we should all have a choice whether we want to do something or not, but when it comes to euthanasia that’s when people’s opinions change. No one can really imagine what it must be like to be in the position when you know that you either won’t make it or will never get back to the way you used to be until you either witness it with your own eyes or it happens to you. Most of the time, people who wish to be euthanized are living in complete misery and are not capable of living their life fullest.
Even if people did agree that euthanasia is morally right as it ends the suffering of others and they can die with dignity, many would worry about if it gets out of control. What if doctors take advantage of the fact that now euthanasia is legal and use it for other reasons such as kill people? Harold Shipman was a family doctor who seemed to be caring and loving to others as that was his job. He had killed over 200 of his patients by injecting lethal doses of painkillers. He mainly only killed old people almost taking them out of misery, for that they would leave Harold money. The only reason he had been caught out is that an undertaker had realized a lot of deaths had been occurring and Harold was signing for all deaths. Harold took his own life by hanging himself in his cell on the 13th of January, 2004. I believe if euthanasia were legalized it would be watched closely and such things like the incident with Harold Shipman wouldn’t occur. In countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Colombia, Luxembourg, and Canada euthanasia is legalized. Just cause it’s legal there that doesn’t mean it’s just as easy to walk in and say you want to be euthanized. In each one of those counties, there are requirements even to get permission to get euthanized.
