The fashion and textile industry plays a huge role in the global economy, selling and employing billions of people worldwide. “It is a three trillion dollar industry that encompasses the manufacturing and selling of textiles and garments” and has one of the highest turnovers. The industry is highly complex as it extends all around the world and focuses on power and greed often ignoring its environmental and social impacts.
The downside of this growth is that the process uses enormous amounts of toxic chemicals which produces heavy pollution resulting in the textile industry being named as the most ecologically harmful industry in the world. The industry fundamentally operates in an unsustainable way; it is one of the most complex and time-consuming industries. Products are being produced faster and faster, and they are largelyy produced in supply chains spread around the globe. “Cheaper goods mean more consumption, which in turn means cheaper goods, which means more consumption. The aim is to slow down fashion where the quality of the design and garment is focused on rather than mass producing quantity. “In a world that strives with newness the industry should focus on new innovative design.” To fully understand the industry, sustainability issues the supply chain has on the environment will be researched.
