The British media plays a huge part in forming this viewpoint. They manipulate the way British society recognizes refugees because most journalists do not talk about them as humans, but as statistics instead. Many articles and stories we read or hear, do not tell the full truth as they use scare statistics which can influence the public into thinking the worst of refugees by talking about them in a negative light. Refugees have also been shown negatively by prominent politicians such as the former UK Prime Minister (2010-2016) – David Cameron- who previously referred to refugees as “swarms” and subsequently Philip Hammond (Chancellor of the Exchequer) who stated refugees could threaten Europe’s “standard of living.” Surely, this attitude has contributed to the recent UK referendum result on Brexit, as recent research had concluded, “nearly, 90% of people who thought immigration was bad for the economy supported leave.” This shows the deep dissatisfaction among society about immigration in the UK.
