Though ‘When Harry met Sally’ seems to effectively show the possibility of a friendship between a man and a woman, when characters Harry and Sally do seem to become friends after Harry becomes divorced and Sally breaks up with her partner this is swiftly ruined as years later Sally is called by her Ex-boyfriend who stated he is engaged. This triggers deep emotions within Sally as the reason for their breakup was due to the idea that he would never marry her, but now she realises that it was not that he didn’t want to get married he just didn’t want to be married to her. This makes Sally call upon the assistance of her friend Harry who comes to her house to comfort her. During this emotional moment, the two become intimate yet immediately regret their decision as it has ruined the possibility of their friendship. This shows in many ways the idea that men and women in Hollywood could not be friends as they seem to be unable to get past the idea that they felt some form of sexual attraction for another causing major argument between them.
Though in classic Hollywood style the film comes to a sweet conclusion as Harry professes his love to Sally on New Year’s Eve stating “when you realise you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” In a film where the main theme seems to be the idea of female and male relations the conclusion that their friendship would have to go to another level shows writer, Nora Ephron’s feelings on the subject as the use of multiple married characters within telling their story of love shows the commonality of male and female relations building to more than just a friendship and blossoming into something more.
