What results has the qualitative approach brought?
The contribution of a qualitative approach has been supportive to the researchers’ questions which can keep the participants’ view individualised and holistic of their understanding of what friendship means to them. The various techniques mentioned here such as written accounts, interviews or the ethnographic approach gives the opportunities to do just that. Where the method started as qualitative data and then was converted to quantitative data, shows the close-ended nature of this approach but still points to an important basis of using a qualitative approach as their first choice. The advantages that a qualitative approach have towards the study of friendship will allow the significance of addressing complex issues to be kept open-minded and inclusive.
