The number of refugees fleeing to western countries, like the UK, has astonished most British people who do not understand the challenges refugees face by trying to flee their own country of origin. What we see in the media today, are the shocking tragedies many refugees are facing throughout the world. In 2015, the full horror of the human tragedy that unfolded in Europe became apparent when images of a washed up lifeless body of a three-year-old Syrian boy was shown by the world’s media. This news story was profound, as it opened the eyes of the British public and encouraged them to help those who were intolerably suffering. It isn’t the exaggeration when I say that millions of people were outraged when they heard about this tragic story which made me believe that the public do show compassion and will not allow this to happen any other refugees. Sadly, I was wrong, a survey was taken later that year, which represented 6,641 British people were asked if they believe the UK should be a safe, welcoming place where many can go to when fleeing from war and persecution. Astonishingly, only 29% of British people agreed whilst 47% disagreed. This statistic shows that even after the media showed the public what happens to refugees who are trying to find safety, they STILL believe that they should not be accepted into Britain. But why on earth would they possess such an uncharitable view?
