Strategic Operation management is one of the modules of my Exec MBA programme. It was a pleasant surprise that my assumptions about it were completely wrong. The principles and operation objectives apply to any business whether private or Public sector. The concept of similar operations success, i.e. Quality, Cost, Speed, Dependability, and flexibility are the core factors in the success of any organization. The SOM study made me wiser on the subject of “ Process Mapping”, Process Designs and Layouts, capacity management, inventory control, process performance measures, Improvement and concepts, such as PDCA ( Plan, do, check, act). I had some idea about these concepts, but the practical exercises like Bottle and Paper and PFD have really helped me to understand the concept with more practicality.
I understand that operations management is the lifeblood of any organization. It can take the organization to a top level and smash it down to the ground if not effective. Looking at the working of my own organization operation management is a vital part with the majority of staff and resources employed. For academic purposes, I have chosen the following three concepts to discuss
- Operations Objectives
- Process Mapping
- Process Design and Layout
I will take each of the above concepts one by one and explain my understanding about it along with its application to my current role and current organization. First of all, let me give you a brief description of my section.
