Much of the stories in O’Brien’s novel “The Things They Carried” are imaginative reinventions of actual episodes that occurred during his own tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968-69. For O’Brien, happening-truth (what actually happened in real life) can be less true than story-truth (what happens only in fiction). Do you agree with O’Brien’s artistic philosophy? Why or why not?
