Discussion questions – Gulliver’s Travels Book I: “A Voyage to Lilliput” How does Gulliver attempt to win the trust

  • How does Gulliver attempt to win the trust of the Lilliputians, many of whom fear him?  Identify at least three specifics.
  • Identify the objects found on Gulliver. What is the “engine” (“machine”) making the sound like a windmill? How do the searchers explain its significance? What comment does this explanation make on the importance of time in society?  Why does Swift go to great lengths to include such a detailed inventory, as reported by a Lilliputian officer himself?
